Great Island challengers sail to success!
Glorious weather and fun at sea were enjoyed by businesses from the shipping and defence industries this weekend, as they took part in the Great Island Challenge, on behalf of the leading maritime charity, Seafarers UK, on the Isle of Wight.
Teams from MOL, MBDA and Bristol Port Shipping, took part in the challenge with 35 participants in total. The challenge ran from Friday afternoon through to Monday morning, with the crews living on yachts provided by Sunsail.
Crews departed from East Cowes on Saturday morning at 9.00am and spent the day enjoying short races and games around the Island. MOL were the winners of the overall sailing competition, for the 2nd year in a row.
On Sunday morning it was another early start with teams cycling around the 100km of coastline in scorching heat. Despite one or two wrong turns, all participants eventually made it to the finish for a well deserved Seafarers Ale, kindly provided by Fullers Brewery.
On Sunday evening everyone joined together to celebrate the success of the weekend, in Cowes Yacht Haven, at a Hawaiian themed party. Despite the exhaustion, everyone was in a party spirit and the celebrations continued late into the night with limbo competitions and the conga getting everyone on their feet.
The event is expected to raise over £30,000 for Seafarers UK, which will go towards supporting maritime charities throughout the UK.
Seafarers UK is Britain’s leading seafaring charity helping people from the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and fishing fleets. The charity needs to raise £3 million per year to continue its work.
