Supporters of Seafarers UK are being offered the chance to win a trip to Mexico. The competition is being run by ferry company Norfolkline to mark the departure of the fleet’s oldest ship the Saga Moon after 25 years of service. After having made over 14,000 voyages, travelling a total of more than 1.6 million nautical miles (enough nautical miles to go round the earth 63 times), carrying 766,950 trucks and trailers, 198,363 new cars and 30,479 horse boxes, the ship has been sold to a company in Mexico and is setting sail for a new home in the Gulf of California, Mexico.
Norfolkline is using the opportunity to raise funds for Seafarers UK, the leading charity for the UK’s maritime community. Seafarers UK gives grants to organisations that help serving or ex-serving seafarers from the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Merchant Navy or fishing fleets, and their families. The charity hopes to raise several thousand pounds and all donations are welcome.
The prize includes return flights and seven nights’ accommodation for two people. Second prize is for a return crossing on Norfolkline Irish Sea for a car and 2 people and 2 tickets to a home Liverpool F.C. match, and third prize is for 2 return flights to Paris.
To enter the competition, simply guess how long it will take Norfolk Line ship to sail from Belfast to La Paz, in Mexico’s Gulf of California. The winner will be the person who guesses most accurately. The Captain’s estimate of the transit time is approximately 22 days. Although it sounds easy don’t forget about the currents, tides, delays at Panama and possibly bad weather that all make it a little more difficult to guess the exact duration of the voyage.
